In this blog post we'll explore different methods to start gardening and easy first steps that you can take as a beginner gardener to make sure you get off on the right foot and reap bountiful harvests for years to come!
My dad always said, "the love of gardening is a seed planted that never dies." In my own experience, this has stayed true. Back when I started gardening, I started with one simple bean plant that I used to train myself to go outside and water at least once a day. The point of that was to go outside and actually look at it, and care for it, and get into the habit of thinking about a plant every day. At that point in life I also had a 2.5 year old toddler and small 3 month old infant, so it was a lot to take care of, but staying in the habit of going into the backyard every day gave me purpose outside of being a mother.
Gardening inspired a purpose in me that I now feel compelled to share with others. The joy of gardening is a gift in life that is priceless and best enjoyed when shared with others!
Here are some easy ways to get started on your gardening journey:
- Visit your local community gardens, a friend's garden, local plant nursery, or closest botanic garden
- Take a walk around your neighborhood and simply observe any landscapes or plants that stand out to you
- Browse online seed catalogs
- Some libraries even have seed banks
